Santeria is the popular name for the religion properly called Regla de Ocha (Rule of the Orisha). This religion is also called Lukumi, after a Yoruba word meaning "friend." This is the religion of the Yoruba people brought over to Cuba as slaves during the previous two centuries. Once in Cuba, it evolved and developed further. Divination with cowerie shells is the traditional way in which the Priest or Priestess communicated with the Orisha. The Orisha are Divinities who exist between God (Olodumare) and mankind.

The Priest/Priestess serves to guide, heal, and advise people through communication with the Orisha. Traditionally, the Santero assists people who are seeking religious and spiritual advice, advice about interpersonal problems, family difficulties, and business issues.
